Service (General)
  • What is the "Prepaid SIM for Japan Travel"?

    It is a prepaid SIM card that can be used for data communication, sold by K-Opticom within Japan.
    This service utilizes the NTT DoCoMo network.

  • Can anyone purchase and use it?

    Yes, anyone can purchase and use it.
    Please note however, that if you have broken our Terms and Conditions of Contract in the past, we may refuse the use.

  • Are data communications charges included in the cost of the "Prepaid SIM for Japan Travel"?

    Yes, it is included. The data amount you can purchase is 1GB, 3GB, 5GB or no limit.

  • Can the SIM card size be changed?

    No it cannot.
    Before making the purchase, please make sure to check the SIM card size for your particular device. Pop out the right size SIM out of the enclosed multi-SIM card.

  • Can I make/receive voice calls and SMS?

    Neither voice calls nor SMS can be used with this service, as it is exclusively for data communication.

  • Can I use roaming services outside of Japan with this?

    It cannot be used outside of Japan. It is not prepared for international roaming.

  • Is tethering available?

    If you are using a SIM lock-free device, yes. No extra arrangements are necessary to use the service.

  • Where can I check the validity period, remaining amount of data available, and the remaining days available?

    Please check your User Page.

  • Do I receive any notification when my remaining data runs low (when using SIM card with 1GB/3GB/5GB data capacity)?

    Yes. We will send you the notification before you use all your data allowance at the e-mail address registered at the time of activation.

  • If I use all my data allowance, will the service be deactivated completely?

    Low-speed communication of 250kbps will still be available during the validity period even if you run out of data capacity.

  • If I no longer need this service, do I need to go through termination of contract arrangements?

    There is no need for extra arrangements to be made. The service will be automatically deactivated after expiration date.

  • Can I share my "Prepaid SIM for Japan Travel" service to another 3rd party?

    No. We ask that the person who purchased the service uses it.
    No reselling or granting 3rd party usage right are allowed.

  • Should I return my SIM card?

    Yes, the SIM card is provided to the customer only during the provision of service.

  • What's『Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi』?

    『Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi』is free Wi-Fi service provided by NTT Broadband Platform, Inc.
    It offers free hotspots throughout Japan. Please use the service together with "Prepaid SIM for Japan Travel".
    * We are not the provider of 『Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi』 service.

  • When using SIM card with no data capacity limit, can I use as much data as I want at no extra fee?

    Correct. Regarding the SIM sold by K-Opticom within Japan, no extra fee will be charged regardless of how much data you use within the designated validity period.
    However, when you use enormous communication exceeding a certain capacity in one day (standard: approximately 2 GB per day) with this SIM, the data access speed will be temporarily limited to 250 kbps, from the viewpoint of fair access to the network. The restriction will be lifted the following day.
    In addition, we will send you an e-mail notification when such excessive data usage is detected.

Coverage areas and cellular devices
  • Where do I get coverage?

    They are "LTE(Xi®)" and "3G(FOMA®)" covered areas.
    (Please note that "Xi®" "FOMA®" are registered trademark products of NTT DoCoMo.)

  • Connectivity is slow?

    The service is provided on the basis of 'best effort', meaning that all efforts are made to maintain a certain level of communication speed, however, it does not guarantee it.
    Connection speed may slow down due to the cellular device, settings, network congestion and protocol being used.

  • The communication speed slows down around noon. Why?

    For 30 minutes from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., the communication speed is limited to 200 kbps.

  • What is the Technical Regulations Conformity Certification?

    Please refer to the description outlined on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

  • Can I use 2G/GSM devices?

    No.

  • What do I do after purchase to start using the service?

    It can be used upon completion of the activation and network setting.

  • What does 'activation' mean?

    We ask you to activate the SIM system online after purchase so that your SIM card may be prepared for use. You can activate your SIM on User Page.
    To use the date communication service, you will then need to set up the network on your device.

  • What is "network setting"?

    You will have to set up your device to ensure that it can connect to the Internet.

  • How do I renew my profile (for iOS) to adjust network settings?

  • I cannot use data communication. What should I do?

    Please ensure that you have completed the activation and network setting.

    If you have done this, but still experiencing trouble connecting, please try the following:
    - Take your SIM card out and restart your device.
    - Re-adjust network settings.
    - Turn on 'data communication' setting.
    - Turn off airplane mode or Wi-Fi.

  • Is there a time limit for activation of the "Prepaid SIM for Japan Travel"?

    Yes there is an 'expiration date' by which the customer must activate the SIM card. If you miss this date, you can't use your SIM card.

Recharge
  • What are the recharge options?

    There is capacity charge for 1GB, 3GB, or 5GB SIM card, and days charge for SIM card with unlimited data capacity.

  • What is required when recharging?

    Credit card is required.
    We accept VISA, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, Diners and Discover.

  • Until when is my SIM card rechargeable?

    A 1GB/3GB/5GB SIM is rechargeable until the usage period is over. You can choose from 200MB, 500MB or 1GB for data top-up. Please note, however, that you can only recharge your SIM once a day.
    For a SIM with unlimited data capacity, you can recharge it by extending the validity for either 1, 2 or 3 more days. Please note, however, that extension of more than 3 days is not available.

  • I lost my SIM card. Can you replace it with a new one?

    No, your SIM card cannot be reissued even if lost, stolen or damaged. Please kindly take note.
